The .msg file extension is used by Microsoft Outlook email message files. Outlook is a product developed by Microsoft to manage emails, calendar, contacts and calendars. At the precise moment a message is created or saved in Outlook, the system creates a file with an .msg extension. This file contains important information about the e-mail message, including the body of the message, the sender's name, the name of the person who will receive the message, the subject, and the date. Technical details of MSG files

The .MSG file format was developed by Microsoft Office and it is not a simple text file, it contains all the information of the message, including outgoing and destination network data, so it is not possible to open it with the notepad, Word, etc. The messages are created in a composite binary format and require a MAPI-compliant system to display them. Due to this specific file structure, it is not always easy to import your Outlook messages into a different email service. The .MSG file is created automatically by the system when executing certain functions. For example, when you save a message, the system automatically exports the contents of your email and creates the MSG file.

Other uses of the .msg extension

The FallOut video game contains dialogues between the characters using files with the .msg extension. Each line of indexed text has three sets of curly braces {}. The first set indicates the line index, which is represented by a number. The second set indicates the name of an optional associated .ACM sound file. The third set contains the text that is displayed, either for an observation window or a dialog box. In this case, the .msg files are editable with Notepad or Wordpad.

• Try double clicking on a MSG file in Windows File Explorer.
• If the MSG reading software is associated correctly then the file will open
• If the file did not open you should install Microsoft Outlook
• To open MSG file in Microsoft Outlookyou need to launch it and then select File->Open in the main menu
• In the File Open dialog select MSG file and click "Open"
